Maven’s Story

How a fighter pilot, a deployment, and a mission to help people built Maven Roofing

It Was 2011.

It is 2011, and I (JT) am sitting on the steps of the temporary barracks that have been erected in Central Afghanistan. I am there as an F-18 fighter pilot, and I am struggling. I am not in a good place, and I am fighting demons.

I am suddenly very alone, in the middle of a busy base with time to kill. So, I started reading books hoping to make my life better. I picked up a book called “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell.

Gladwell went on to describe how Mavens are the people who are the go-to’s for their expertise. They are the experts whom people seek out for their knowledge and wisdom. They are trusted and relied upon.

I loved and identified with the word maven. I could feel it in my bones. Who would not want to be the go-to? The trusted. The person they relied upon. The Maven.

"Who would not want to be the go-to?
The trusted.
The person they relied upon.
The Maven."

When My Father Was Passing Away

When my father was passing away, he shared with me that it was very important for me that I find a career where I could help people.

“Be selfless and find a way to help people, and everything else will come from there.”

And so, after a 48-hour period, I woke up, and I said, “You know what? We’re going to do that. We’re going to help these people.”

North Carolina Became Home.

Maven, the name and idea, was born in Afghanistan. The mission was in North Carolina, and the call came when I was in Nebraska.

For the first time in a long time, I was in a place that felt like home. My wife was pregnant with Axel. And most importantly, I did not feel alone in the world, and I was making a difference.

We decided to put roots down here in North Carolina and move our headquarters.
